Everyone always forgets that Columbus is a big city. It’s the fifteenth largest city in the country, right behind San Francisco. According to the Census, Columbus has 809,798 people living within its borders and it is one of the fastest growing large cities in the nation. It has the highest metropolitan concentration of Fortune 1000 companies in America and is the home of the research school Ohio State University (OSU) and Battelle, the world’s biggest private research institute.
The city is heavily focused on downtown revitalization, with recent projects being the Columbus Commons park, parks along the Scioto Mile developed along with a reshaped riverfront, and developments along High Street, in the Arena District and Franklinton.
As the winner of the U.S. Department of Transportation's (USDOT) first-ever Smart City Challenge, Columbus has been awarded $50 million in grant funding and the designation as America's Smart City. We're "becoming smart" by embracing the reinvention of transportation to accelerate human progress. And with it, taking on the coveted job of teaching cities as they evolve similarly around the world.
The Columbus Metropolitan Library is a wonderful library system that is consistently ranked as one of the best, if not the best, library systems in the nation. It has a fabulous selection; it has an excellent website; it is very easy to reserve and then borrow books, movies, and CDs.
The library has even been honored recently with the National Medal for Museum and Library Service from The Institute of Museum and Library Services. This is the nation's highest honor for community service initiatives in libraries and museums.
German Village does not have a recreated sense of history or kitschy Bavarian feel ~ rather, it is a neighborhood with architecture dating from the 1840s-1890s. People walk to their destinations, park on the street and live life at a very pedestrian level. The neighborhood is extremely dense ~ very often only inches separate neighboring structures, and many structures were built for multi-family use. German Village is notably different because its appearance has changed so little.
The area is mostly a residential neighborhood of sturdy, red-brick homes with wrought iron fences along tree-lined, brick-paved streets. In 2007, German Village was recognized by the White House as a Preserve America Community. The German Village Guest House has been recognized as one of the best in the Midwest by the New York Post, The Plain Dealer, and the St. Louis Post Dispatch, and positively reviewed by the Washington Post and The Tennessean. It was rated as the "Best Columbus Hotel 2010" by City Search.
Olde Towne East is located in the historical Near East Side of Columbus, Ohio. It is one of Columbus’ oldest neighborhoods; one of the very first suburban areas in Columbus. Nestled between Downtown, Bexley, and Driving Park, Olde Towne East has over 1,000 homes, some as old as the 1830s, and more than 50 architectural styles including Italianate, Queen Anne and Victorian.
Revitalization is now underway. These structures are being restored to the grand homes they once were. Originally costing perhaps $6000 to construct during the 19th and early 20th centuries, if an Olde Towne East home was constructed today the cost would be astronomical, and practically impossible to build due to the now rare fine craftsmanship of the era and expensive materials used.
